On the Frontlines at Work and at Home: How the Pandemic is Disproportionately Affecting Women

The Shift presented by Kohler is a female-focused speaker series centered on fueling women’s career trajectories.

In this Shift session, our speakers will discuss the troubling reports of job losses among women in the first quarter of 2021 due to ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 140,000 jobs were eliminated at the end of 2020 with women accounting for all of the jobs lost.

Women – and especially women of color – are disproportionately represented in many industries most affected by recent unemployment claims such as hospitality, retail and entertainment. At the same time, women often bear the sole responsibility of caregiving, due to long-standing stereotypes surrounding gender roles.

Too often, women are asked to carry the weight of economic stability for families and communities, even as they are pushed out of the workforce in record numbers.

What do women need to feel supported in their roles day-to-day? What actions, large and small, can employers take to help women stay in their roles and reverse these negative trends?
